Mathaisenkar-Klettersteig — via ferrata in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

An alternative, far longer line onto the Alpspitze from Hammersbach: three and a half hours of approach, then an hour and a half of climbing. The whole day is seven hours and 1,860 metres of ascent.

The route is unstaffed and free to enter — the months below are the guidebook season, not opening hours. In the Alps snow decides: high routes are often passable only from July. Check conditions with the cable car operator or the local tourist office.

Gear and requirements

Harness, via ferrata lanyard with an energy absorber (EN 958) and a helmet. The route is unstaffed with no rental at the start — bring your own gear or hire it down in the valley.

Tickets: Free to enter — the route has no ticket office and no staff.
