Alpspitz-Ferrata — via ferrata in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The best-known Wetterstein ferrata: from the top station of the Alpspitzbahn at the Osterfelderkopf, 530 metres of secured ascent to the summit of the Alpspitze. The technical difficulty is moderate, but queues on fine weekends can stretch the day out.

Free access, but only in season. Season: June – October.

The route is unstaffed and free to enter — the months below are the guidebook season, not opening hours. In the Alps snow decides: high routes are often passable only from July. Check conditions with the cable car operator or the local tourist office.

Gear and requirements

Harness, via ferrata lanyard with an energy absorber (EN 958) and a helmet. The route is unstaffed with no rental at the start — bring your own gear or hire it down in the valley.

Tickets: The ferrata itself is free, but the standard approach uses a cable car and that is paid. The operator revises the fares every season — check before you go.
