Höhenglücksteig — via ferrata in Hirschbach

The oldest and best-known via ferrata in the Franconian Jura, hidden in the woods of the Hersbrucker Alb. The hard variants can be bypassed, which leaves a route graded C.

The main line is C/D; the hard variants, among them the "Wittmann-Schikane", reach E.

Free access, but only in season. Season: April – October.

The route is unstaffed and free to enter — the months below are the guidebook season. On the non-Alpine crags it is damp and ice that decide rather than altitude; after rain the limestone and sandstone can be unclimbable.

Gear and requirements

Harness, via ferrata lanyard with an energy absorber (EN 958) and a helmet. The route is unstaffed with no rental at the start — bring your own gear or hire it down in the valley.

Tickets: Free to enter — the route has no ticket office and no staff.
