Innsbrucker Klettersteig (Nordkette) — via ferrata in Innsbruck

Karwendel (Nordkette) · Innsbruck, Tirol

A long ridge route above Innsbruck from the Hafelekar over the Langer Sattel to the Frau-Hitt-Sattel, with about 2 km of cable and a rope bridge. The first part is mainly ridge, the second towers, notches and steep walls (C/D passages). It starts 10 minutes from the Nordkettenbahnen top station; the full route takes 5–7.5 hours, and since it follows a ridge it needs settled weather.

Season and hours

Free access, but only in season. Season: June – October.

The Nordkettenbahnen operator opens the via ferrata in late June, depending on snow; it gives no end date, so October in the calendar is our approximation. Last cable car down from the Seegrube: 17:30, or 18:30 from June to September — plan the route around it.

Gear and requirements

Harness, via ferrata lanyard with an energy absorber (EN 958) and a helmet. The route is unstaffed with no rental at the start — bring your own gear or hire it down in the valley.

The Nordkette shop at the Seegrube rents harness, lanyard and helmet (€25 per day in 2026). Book the set online by the day before and bring photo ID as a deposit; gloves are not rented.

Tickets: The via ferrata itself is free, but you reach the start on the paid Hungerburgbahn and Nordkettenbahnen; the operator sells a separate via ferrata ticket in its online shop. Fares change every season.
